Sarah Smelser is the first award recipient from “Inked Surfaces” National Juried Exhibition of Prints at DVC Art Gallery in September 2012. Juror Archana Horsting, Executive Director of Kala Art Institute awarded Sarah from 174 artists who submitted print art works to the exhibition.

Sarah Smelser received her BA from University of California at Santa Cruz, her MA and MFA from the University of Iowa.  Sarah has had solo exhibitions at Bridgewater/Lustberg & Blumenfeld in New York City, Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in New York City, Urban Institute for Contemporary Art in Grand Rapids, MI, Carnegie Mellon University, and Bradley University.  In 2007 Sarah was one of 15 American artists to be invited to participate in the China Sanbao International Printmaking Exhibition and Symposium. She is co-founder of Mannekin Press, a fine art print publishing venture, and currently serving as Associate Professor of Art at Illinois State University, Normal, IL.

This DVC Art Gallery Exhibition is titled: Ballad: Recent Prints by Sarah Smelser. It is made up of works made during the spring and summer of 2013.  A portion of the work is from a two–week residency she did this summer at the Skopelos Foundation for the Arts on the island of Skopelos in Greece.  Each piece is made using a series of reactions: she starts with a form and responds to it, respond to the response and so on.  – “My imagery is evidence of an interior conversation. It is also an effort to tread a line between elegant and awkward, deliberate and intuitive, skilled and naïve.”

Diablo Valley College Art Gallery is located north side of campus facing Parking Lot 8 on Golf Club Road. Gallery Hours is Monday through Thursday, 11 am - 4 pm, Friday 11 am – 3 pm. Wednesday is open late until 7 pm (closed on 11/11 Veterans Day). The artist reception is scheduled Monday, Nov. 25, 5:30-7:30pm. Separately Sarah will give a lecture and technical demonstration at DVC Printmaking Studio (A101) on Nov. 26 at 11 am. All events are open for public.
